California Bay Area CODEPINK peace activists sent a Peace Caravan to Nevada this past Saturday. On Monday they are started a mass a mobilization at Creech Air Force Base, Indian Springs, Nevada, to protest illegal U.S. drone warfare. The big convergence for peace and justice will be March 4-6, 2015. Organizers expect 200 participants to join "Camp Justice", starting with road-side vigils during commuter drive-time. The national gathering is branded "SHUT DOWN CREECH! - Mass Mobilization to Stop Drone Wars! A Convergence for Peace in the Nevada Desert"

Five national peace organizations have been working overtime for months to prepare for this protest, which will culminate in a nonviolent action to actually SHUT DOWN CREECH on Friday, Mar. 6.

A recent independent study indicated that the identity of 28 out of 29 people executed by U.S. drone missiles are unknown, thus providing strong evidence that drone killings are primarily indiscriminate assassinations, ergo incapable of meeting "just-war" criteria.

"The communities that are targeted under drone hellfire missiles have no air force and are totally defenseless against these brutal high tech weapons," says organizer, Toby Blome. "These unconscionable military practices are only fostering greater and greater hatred and outrage against the U.S. .... It's time to stop this egregious and illegal drone program...."

Nevada Desert Experience member Marcus-Page Collonge said, "As nonviolent, spiritually-minded civillians, we must stop the outrageous escalation of violence and terrorism right here, right now--this beautiful desert is desecrated by the spiritual sickness of Creech's psychotic ongoing drone rampage."

Coming from over 17 states, including Maine, Alaska and Hawaii, hundreds of veterans and many other activists hope that Creech, the home military base for drone warfare, will be shut down this Friday. Creech is the site of CIA and Pentagon air-strike control that terrorize and kill civilians in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia. Demonstrators will demand the permanent banishment of:
  • the use of drones for extra-judicial killings,
  • surveillance on civilian populations, and
  • the sale and distribution of drone warfare technology by all governments.

The highway US-95 leading from Las Vegas to the base will be embellished with a long trail of giant banners with diverse anti-drone/anti-war messaging. Organizers will re-name US-95 the "Drone Victims Memorial Highway" as they lay out tombstones, and other memorials with victims' names and ages to underscore the dark side of drone warfare and to highlight Creech as the criminal site where these unlawful killings are executed, and from where drone pilots, following illegal orders, have caused the deaths of over 200 Pakistan children alone.

More info is found on the ShutDownCreech blog.

SHUT DOWN CREECH is collectively organized by CODEPINK, Veterans For Peace, Nevada Desert Experience, Voices for Creative Nonviolence and Women's International League for Peace & Freedom. Over 40 national organizations are endorsing the event, including Iraq Veterans Against the War. CODEPINK is a women-led grassroots organization working to "end U.S. wars and militarism, support peace and human rights initiatives, and redirect tax dollars into healthcare, education, green jobs and other life-affirming programs".
