Sunday, May 28

There was be a sunrise ceremony, followed by a break. And then a large
interfaith service from 11 am - 2 pm, followed by a rally, and direct
action crossing the line into the test site.

The Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) planned to detonate 700 tons of heavy ammonium nitrate/fuel oil charge above a tunnel structure at the Nevada Test Site. The DTRA reports that the main purpose of the test is to study ground shock effects on deeply buried tunnel structures. Environmental activists and analysists predict, however, that the test is a preparation for the development of new nuclear weapons--like the bunker-buster.

This test, administered by the Department of Energy (DOE) National Nuclear Security Administation (NNSA) was scheduled for June 2nd, was then postponed to June 23rd, and then was reported as being postponed indefinitely as government lawyers withdrew a finding that there would be "no significant impact" from the blast. See the Las Vegas Sun article about the postponement. The DOE said it planned to go ahead with Divine Strake -- as early as September. See the Las Vegas Sun Article about these developments. Now, the DOE says it will delay the test until possibly next year and perhaps move it. Read more in the Las Vegas Review Journal article. And read Divine Strake Stopped! by Will Parish for an overview of the action and the Las Vegas Sun's coverage of the Peace Camp. Indiana residents responded to the possibility of the test being held there and the DOE said it would not be held there. See the News-Sentinel article for more information. It had appeared that White Sands, New Mexico would be the planned site for the test. Read more about that in the Albuquerque Tribune article. However, Senator Domenici says the test is again destined for Nevada. Read the Las Vegas Sun article.

NDE, along with the STOP DIVINE STRAKE COALITION called for an international day of action on May 28th to call for peace, no war on Iran, and environmental justice. Many concerned people joined together on Memorial Day weekend at the Nevada Test Site to bring these plans to a halt.

We invite you to inform yourself about this issue by visiting the links below and take action by contacting your congressional representatives. Though the test has been "postponed indefinitely," this does not mean that the DTRA will not seek to go forward with it after it has made further assessment.
