6:00: The
Original Child Bomb: Inspired by Thomas Merton's
poem, The
Original Child Bomb shows the human cost of nuclear
weapons. The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are
depicted through declassified footage, photographs,
drawings and testimonies of mothers, brothers and
soldiers.
Followed by discussion facilitated by NDE Coordinator
Jim Haber. and then...
7:30: Dr.
Strangelove (or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and
Love the Bomb): Starring Peter Sellers and George
C. Scott, directed by Stanley Kubrick, this classic
Cold War comedy from 1964 is irreverent and very pointed.
Younger audiences may be amused by what passed for
"high-tech" 45 years ago in this satire
of the nuclear scare that continues to be relevant
despite the fall of the Soviet Union.
Organized by Nevada Desert Experience as part
of Nuclear Free Future Month and the annual August
Desert Witness. For other event information, contact
