- August Desert Witness 2011 -

On August 6, 1945 the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, and on August 9, 1945, the United States dropped another atomic bomb on the city of Nagasaki. 200,000 people were killed, most in a matter of seconds; for some it took much longer. Over the next 66 years, others have died and suffered health effects from testing other nuclear weapons and from the mining, refining, deployment, and waste from the nuclear weapon "bomplex."

We come together again, to remember all who have been injured in those first attacks and subsequent incidents. This gathering is in support of NDE members Jim Haber and Mary Lou Anderson who are traveling to Hiroshima and Nagasaki for the memorial conferences there. Read more about their participation.

And all of August is Nuclear Free Future Month, organized by the United for Peace and Justice Nuclear Disarmament and Redefining Security Working Group of which NDE is an active participant. Look to their website for events near you and other resources.
